Keep subject lines descriptive and short

Your subject line should be descriptive and relatively short. Ideally, it should give the recipient a really good idea of what your email contains and whether they want to open your message. It can also assist in the recipient finding the message in the future if they need to refer back to it.

Bad subject lines:

"Hi"

"Tuesday"

"Quick Question"

"Urgent"

"Are you busy"

"Please call me"

"[blank]"

What are you emailing them about? It’s completely unclear. Some of these examples can put people on the defensive at the start and that is not how you want to initiate communication. Most of the time emails with bad subjects will be ignored completely.

Good subject line:

"Summary of 12/2 call with Paycom"

This line leaves no doubt about the contents of the email. There’s a lot to be said for minimalism – users need you to be clear and concise in your subject lines, as time is always an asset.

If you need further assistance with creating good subject lines please feel free to call the IT Helpdesk at 574.472.7375 or open a ticket at http://helpdesk.goodwill-ni.org so we can schedule a time review some past emails you have sent to see how the subject lines may have been written better.
